We are feeling great after a fun-filled week! We have worked hard on presenting our Famous Missourian projects, and everyone did a nice job! We capped off the week by enjoying some pizza and Kona Ice, thanks to donations from our PTA.

As we approach the end of the year, I just wanted to say how fortunate I have been to have the kids, parents, and support that I have recieved this year. It is always a little hard to say goodbye for the summer, but I look forward to seeing each of these kids again in the fall as they walk a little further down the hall to 5th grade!

Here is a quick snapshot of our week:

Reading- We are enjoying reading wacky stories from Wayside School this week!

Social Studies- Our kids worked hard on researching and presenting their famous Missourian projects. From Harry Truman to Ella Ewing to Satchel Paige, Missouri sure has a lot of famous people who call our state "home"!

Math- The kids have been working with partners on a project-based fraction activity, and we have been spending the end of each day presenting our solutions.

Writing- We are finishing up our unit on Figurative language, and we have also been borrowing some writing time to put towards our Famous Missourian projects!

Don't forget, field day is Monday, so make sure your kids are dressed in old clothes and tennis shoes!
One more week of school until summer break, I think we're going to make it :)

We have been busy finishing the math sections of the MAP test this week! It sure feels great to be finished, and I am proud of the kids behavior and effort during testing.

As a reminder, Monday May 8th we will be going on a field trip to Buckman Farms. I have all of the permission slips, and remember that students are provided lunch free of charge, which is a nice little side benefit to this trip! Buses will leave at 11:00am, and we should be returning sometime between 2:00 and 2:45pm. This is a local farm, so the travel time is manageable.

We are looking forward to our parent lunch coming up on Friday, May 12th. I am expecting a great turnout, and the kids are so excited to share the poetry they've created! I will be sending an email reminder next week, so be looking out for it.

This week in class, we have worked hard on testing, but we have also had a lot of fun. Our kids created cool geometry stars, got to play with several different types of robots, and even made some cool paper airplanes! It has been an awesome, but tiring week!

Next week, we will be giving our last round of AIMS web and DRA tests. The AIMS web is an assessment of reading fluency, or reading aloud. The DRA is more involved, as it also contains a comprehension section. It is important that students read the materials carefully, and they need to go back to the text to help them write out complete answers to the questions. We will review this before we begin, but I thought I would mention it so you can discuss it with them at home this weekend.

I am proud of our kids for how they carried themselves during testing. We only have a few weeks left until summer!

Have a great weekend, and I will be back with another update next week!

I am so excited for the circus this weekend, and I know the kids are as well! We are still looking to fill a couple of spots on our SignUp Genius the last time I checked, so if you are available for the slots listed, please don't be shy! Thanks to everyone who has worked hard to make this event special!

By the way, our raffle basket looks AMAZING!!! It is definitely a front-runner that has gotten a lot of votes from the students today.

One more thing:

MAP testing is next week!

We will be testing Monday-Thursday. Please make every effort to make sure your child is at school, rested, and on-time. We will begin testing at 8:35 each day, so students will have time to get breakfast (if they eat at school) and come down to the room to get ready for testing.

Please have a talk with your child about the importance of trying their best, and taking their time! It is not a race!

We will be having afternoon recess at 1:30 each day to make up for missing the morning recess, and we have some fun activities planned next week.

I will be looking for students who are giving their best effort, have a great attitude, and taking their time/checking over their work. I know every student is capable of doing great on this test!

We will not be having reading logs or spelling next week due to MAP testing.

I think that's about it for this week. If you have any questions about testing, please feel free to contact me!

Have a great weekend!

We are busy as always here in room 218! A few important reminders to start:

-We need volunteers for the April 29 Circus at BEU! Parents are needed to help with games and prizes. Any times will be appreciated! Please contact me or Jennifer Hecht to get signed up and make this first annual spring fundraiser a great one!

-MAP testing will begin the week after next (first week of May). Next week, we will spend some time taking a practice Reading and Math test to help kids get comfortable with the test format.

-Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Raffle basket. Keep selling those tickets, and if you need more we have extra booklets here at BEU.

Here is a quick rundown of the past week!

Reading- We are continuing to enjoy our novel, "House Arrest". We have been practicing answering short response questions to get us ready for the MAP test!

Math- We have really enjoyed moving around to different teachers to review measurement concepts. Kids have reviewed angles, shapes, using rulers, etc.

Writing- I am so proud of the effort the kids are putting into their poetry notebooks! We are so excited to share them on May 12 (see note in Friday folders this week, and save the date!)

Social Studies- This week we are beginning research on our Famous Missourian projects! Kids are expected to find as much biographical informatioin as they can (they have a note-taking page) and then they have a choice of how they will present their projects. More to come on this as we make progress.

Well, that's about it for this week! Remember, we need volunteers for the BEU Circus, and it is happening next Saturday (April 29) from 5pm to 8pm. Have a great weekend!

We are so excited for our Walk-a-Thon! "Miles for Moms" is the name, and it should be a great time for everyone!

We have raised more than double what we set as our goal, so that will allow us to give even more back to our community.

Remember, the event will be held during the school day on March 17. The event will begin at 1:15pm and last for about an hour.

Other than next week's event, here are some of the things we have been working on this past week-

Math- We are continuing our fraction investigation unit. Next week, we will finish up the investigation unit, and we will move into adding and subtracting fractions.

Writing- In writing, we have finished our planning page for our opinion paper, and we have completed our research for our topic. Students will need to write a paper that is for or against making the journey on the Oregon Trail, and the kids have really had a good time finding interesting facts about the topic.

Reading- We are almost to the end of "The Mighty Miss Malone"! We are enjoying the ending to our story, and our instructional focus this past week has been on homophones, which are words that are spelled differently, but sound the same (so, sew).

Science- We have been learning all about waves! Next week, we will move from water waves to sound waves. In fact, students are building background today by learning about different properties of sound, and we will be sharing on Monday!

I think that's about it for this week. Please encourage your child to continue using the reading logs, and make sure they are getting signed when they are turned in Fridays!

Have a great weekend!Mr. Morawitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09886393209054351508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3024161000157354195.post-65725563074228946512017-03-03T10:49:00.000-08:002017-03-03T10:49:33.711-08:00March 3, 2017 Weekly UpdateHello Families!

We have gotten off to a great start with our fundraising for our walk-a-thon! So far, our classroom has brought in over 60 dollars! That is almost halfway to our goal already! Let's keep working on getting those donations, because the money will be going to a really great cause!

Here is a quick update about the classroom happenings:

Math- We are still working with fractions, decimals, and percents in our investigation unit. We will be looking at adding and subtracting fractions soon as well!

Writing- The students are planning out their persuasive essays on the Oregon Trail. They have done a lot of research the past week or so, and they will be working on finishing their planning page and writing their draft next week.

Reading- We are excited to get back into our Interactive Language notebooks! This past week, we talked about fragments and run-on sentences. Next week, we will continue to read "Mighty Miss Malone" and talk about homophones!

Science- We are learning so many cool facts about waves! For example, did you know that a beach ball in the middle of the ocean will simply bob up and down? We are also defining wavelength, frequency, crest, and trough, which are all parts of a wave.

Well, I think that covers the main topics. Have a great weekend and I will send email updates as needed!Mr. Morawitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09886393209054351508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3024161000157354195.post-50238352147431559462017-02-23T18:28:00.003-08:002017-02-23T18:28:44.242-08:00February 24, 2017 Weekly UpdateHello Families!

We have had a busy week back from our conference break! Here is a quick rundown of this week's happenings:

Math- We have been working on relating fractions to percentages (for example, 50 percent is 1//2). We are also exploring the idea of equivalent fractions. Students have practiced matching fractions to percentages, and we even played a cool game to help us with this skill!

Writing- In writing, we are researching the pros and cons of riding the Oregon Trail! Students are learning the reasons people were drawn to relocate out west, and they are also learning about the struggles along the way. After we complete our background and research, we will be working on drafting our persuasive essay!

Reading- We have been enjoying "The Mighty Miss Malone" for our read-aloud! This week, we reviewed parts of speech, and next week we will focus on sentence structure (recognizing run-on sentences and fragments).

Science- In science, we are continuing to study waves, specifically amplitude and frequency of waves. Students have been watching interesting videos, reading articles, and doing quick experiments to learn how waves behave in nature.

Don't forget, we will be having a "Miles for Moms" Walk-a-thon on March 17th, from 1:15 to 2:30pm! Students know to attempt to get donations for the walk. This money will be used to put together activity baskets for expecting mothers of special needs students.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. See you next week!

We are recovering from the struggles of the Oregon Trail this week (Our kids wrote an informational essay on the topic :) and we are getting our goals ready for Spring Conferences! I hope your child can attend the conference with you, but if not, I had them fill out goals for reading, math, and writing, and I would like to share them during our meeting.

If you need to reschedule your conference time, please call the main office, and Barb or Sarah will reschedule you.

Here is a brief rundown of what we have learned this past week, as well as what's to come:

Writing- We are finishing our Missouri city research, and we are getting ready to write our persuasive essays! Students will be expected to defend a position using supporting evidence from articles, videos, or other sources.

Math- We have just finished our first division unit (Topic 8), and we will now be looking at fractions in a problem-solving unit called "Name that Portion". Students will learn how to compare and order fractions, and solve real-world type problems along the way. It should be a lot of fun!

Reading- We are continuing to enjoy "The Mighty Miss Malone", and we have been talking about monitoring our comprehension, or knowing when we lose understanding. We have learned that when we lose focus or get confused, we can re-read, read-on, and ask ourselves questions to help us make sense again. Next week, we will continue to monitor for understanding and read through chapter 17.

Science- We are working our way through waves! Students have learned about different kinds of waves (such as light and sound), wave frequency and amplitude, and wavelength. We will continue our exploration of waves next week.

I think that about covers it! I am looking forward to meeting with everyone at conferences!

We have had such an interesting and busy week!

First, we were treated to a lesson on electricity by our friends at Boone Electric! The kids learned some interesting properties of electricity, and they also learned some valuable safety tips! Ask them, and I'm sure they will remember!

Also, we are so grateful to our fourth grade parent volunteers who have come in for Career Week! We have had doctors, police officers, firemen, technology supervisors, and others come in to discuss what their job entails and how they had to work to get there. It has been fun to hear the kids talk about all of the exciting new opportunities we discovered this week!

Here is a brief rundown of the past week in class:

Reading- We are enjoying "The Mighty Miss Malone", and we are practicing summarizing in fiction.
In Daily 5 groups, we are excited to begin some new novels and review comprehension strategies!

Math- We will be taking our division test (Topic 8) on Wednesday. I will be sending the practice game home by email so kids can practice before-hand.

Writing/SS- We are working through our informational writng piece, and finishing up our research on Missouri Cities! Next week, we will be working on adding details and drafting our informational essays.

I think that covers most of what we have done this week. Please remember to bring in shoeboxes for our craft next week, if you have extras available!

Thanks, and enjoy the weekend!

I hope you are getting through the heart of winter! The days may be short, but they are still busy and full of learning in room 218!

I wanted to give a quick "thank you" to Mrs. Lynn, our school nurse, for coming in to discuss spinal screening. Spinal screening for girls will be held during the morning of Thursday, January 26th. Boys' screenings will take place during middle school. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Here is a snapshot of what we've been working on the past week:

Reading- We are working with author's purpose and fact vs. opinion this week. Knowing why the author wrote a given text, or why they made a certain plot choices helps us understand what we are reading.

During our Daily Five time, students have been responding to written response questions on ipads, as well as meeting with me for winter DRA updates.

Math- I'm sure your child has mentioned that we have been working through division basics. Specifically, we have been practicing dividing two and three-digit numbers. I have also been looking to work with students who need/want extra practice during our morning arrival time. I love seeing the kids confidence grow with practice!

Writing- We are researching our Missouri cities and learning how to navigate and look for credible information from online sources. Next week, we will organize our notes and begin planning out and writing our informational reports.

Social Studies- Our social studies unit is integrated into our writing time for this unit, as we are conducting research on our local region. We will be writing an informational paper based on the founding, development, and current status of various cities around our state.

That's the report for this week. Remember to have your child read at home, and keep up with the reading logs. Until next time, have a great weekend!

We had a short week last week, but it was good to get back into the swing of things. We have started working on a few exciting things that I wanted to mention in this update.

First, we have begun working on our Missouri City Research Paper. In this paper, students are to research information about different aspects of a city they chose. This week, we started taking notes on our cities, and students have been given a note-taking page with different topics for them to research. Next week, we will finish up our research and begin looking at pre-writing and organizing our research papers. We will mostly be focusing on the introduction, body, and conclusion of an informational essay.

This week in math, we have also started dividing whole numbers! I encourage all students to continue to practice their basic facts. I can't stress enough how much this is going to help them in division.

Finally, we have started an exciting new novel in reading, called "The Mighty Miss Malone". This is a realistic fiction story set during The Great Depression, and we have talked about what life was like in those times, to provide the students some historical context for the book.

Please take note of the weather forecast, as there is a possibility that school may be called off if conditions are expected to be dangerous. Due to the weather, I will be giving students the STAR Math and Reading tests today, so as to not have to worry about it tomorrow.

Hope everyone stays warm, and enjoy the Monday off!

We are getting close to Winter Break!

Please remember the kids will have their winter party this Tuesday. I will email times/details reminders on Monday. We are looking forward to sharing a great time with friends and I want to thank everyone who has helped make this possible!

I also want to congratulate everyone on a spectacular musical performance on Thursday evening. Our class did a great job in both the singing and speaking roles. They also did a nice job in the audience as the BEU choir sang some holiday favorites. What a nice inauguration for what will become a yearly tradition.

A quick update on the classroom:

Social Studies/Writing- Students have completed their presentations on Missouri regions. We learned about the rich farmland in the north, the dense forests and hills in the south, and the rolling plains in the west. Students practiced their parts and made interesting slideshows.

Math- We have completed our problem-solving unit. I think the kids found it very challenging, as they were required to use multiplication to find the answers to division situations. We worked extensively with partners, and the kids are learning to share ideas and solve problems together!

Reading- As a treat, I am reading "Maniac Magee" by Jerry Spinelli. This has been a favorite book of mine for years, and I can tell the students agree! They just can't wait to see what happens to Maniac next! Along the way, we are reviewing narrative elements, and next week we will experiment using our ipads to answer questions on Schoology!

I want to wish everyone a happy winter break. I hope your time off is relaxing and full of cheer. See you in 2017!

I hope you're all staying warm during this cold snap! We have had a great week, and here are some of the things we have been learning in class:

Math- Working in groups and problem solving have been the keys to our success in math this week. The problems the kids are working through are division based, but they use multiplicatioin to help the students understand the meaning of division. They enjoy creating posters with their partners and showing them to the other students!

Writing- We are integrating writing and social studies as students are preparing presentations for the regions we have been researching. Students took notes, made maps, and will be making a powerpoint presentation about their regions next week.

Reading- We are finishing up our read aloud book! It has been so exciting, it's hard to imagine starting something else, but we will soon have to move on to another great story. Stay tuned!

Before I go, I wanted to mention that we are having our class spelling bee next week. I will send an email out soon with a reminder, but it will be held Tuesday afternoon. I am encouraging all students to participate, so I hope everyone can join in on the fun!

We'll see everyone at the musical on December 15th! Take care, and winter break is approaching soon!

We are happy to be back from break, and I hope everyone enjoyed some much needed time off!

Here is a quick breakdown of the things we did in room 218 this past week:

Math- We spent the week looking at a problem solving situation that gave us practice with multiplication, and introduced some important connections with division.

Reading- We have started putting together a parts of speech interactive notebook. So far, we have covered nouns and pronouns. Next week, we will look at verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

Social Studies- We are researching the different regions of our state. Next week, we will complete note-taking and work with groups to create a map of our region that shows landforms, economic products, and other features!

Spelling- Students will be working on Sort 9 next week in spelling, and they will take the spelling test over sort 8 on Monday.

I wanted to extend my thanks to everyone who helped contribute to our holiday feast before the break. The kids really enjoyed it, and it would be a great tradition to start for our new school. Thanks again, and have a great weekend!
Conference week seemed extra busy and hectic with all of the election drama going on! It feels good to get back to a sense of calm before the holiday week has us rushing about all over again!

Speaking of conferences, I am thankful for meeting with everyone last week. I appreciate you taking the time out to meet with me about your child's progress. I am truly thankful to have this group of students in my class, and I will continue to do my best to keep them focused, engaged, and learning each day.

Thanksgiving Feast (for students)- Thank you to those parents who have agreed to donate a food item for our Thanksgiving feast on Tuesday, November 22nd. The students are really excited to try all of the different traditional favorites!

Students will go to recess and lunch at the normal time, but they will be eating lunch in the classroom, not the cafeteria.

Here is a quick briefing of our busy week:

Math- We are finishing up our lessons on two-digit by two-digit multiplication. We took our unit test on Friday, and we will soon be looking at solving multiple-step problems!

Reading- We have been enjoying our reading of Jack's Run. Everyone is so excited to see if Jack and Joanne will escape, and what will become of the family! We have been studying the problem and solution pattern in stories. In small groups, we are working on comprehension and accuracy.

Social Studies- Next week, we will be starting our unit on Missouri regions. Students will study the goegraphy, economy, resources, and cultural differences between the different regions of the state.

Writing- In writing, we will begin our unit on the informational essay. Students took a pre-test based on the Lewis and Clark adventure, and we will learn and practice with a paper on the Missouri regions. In spelling, students continue to learn to spell based on prefix and suffix patterns, as well as short and long vowel patterns.

I think that covers it for now. I hope everyone has a very safe Thanksgiving, and you celebrate with the ones you care about!

A few things to share this week...

First, please see the conference date/time you were assigned on the confirmation form. This form will be coming home in today's Friday folders. I will also send a second form next week, just in case. If you cannot make the assigned date/time, please call the main office as soon as possible so we can find a better time to meet.

Also, we want to say "Thank You" to everyone who helped make our Fall party such a great time! We are so lucky to have supportive adults that are willing to give of their time to make sure the kids had a great celebration.

Here is a briefing of this past week's classroom happenings:

Math- We just took our Topic 5 multiplication test, and we will be moving on to double-digit multiplication!

Science- We are finishing up our unit on weathering and erosion. Next week, we will take a short assessment to see how much we have learned about these Earth processes.

Reading- We are reviewing story elements. We are really enjoying our new read-aloud book, Jack's Run.

Writing- We are working on our "What America Means to Me" essays. Early this week, we brainstormed words that we relate to the idea of America, and how those words relate. We will eventually be typing these essays!

We have been busy bees in room 218! We just completed our Personal Narrative post-assessment, and we are working hard in ST math today.

Here are a couple of friendly reminders-

The Friday folders handed out today contain the parent conference forms for the fall.

A reminder that conferences are Monday Nov. 7 and Thursday Nov. 10. The form sent home today has a space to put your preference of date and time, as well as a spot to list siblings that attend BEU. If there are multiple family members, our administrators will help schedule those students to make it convenient for families with multiple conferences.

So, please look over the conference form carefully and return it on Monday with your date/time preference.

Here is a quick rundown of our past week in room 218:

Writing- We have finished our personal narrative essays, and we will be moving on to a theme writing about "What America Means to Me" next week. This theme is to prepare for the Grandparents Day event on November 14. More to come on that soon.

Math- We continue to work with multi-digit multiplication, and we worked on a very challenging chicken nuggets lesson on Thursday! Next week, we will begin reviewing and have the Topic 5 test.

Reading- THis week, we continued to study how we can make inferences and predictions based on what the text says along with our background information. Next week, we will go back and review character traits.

Science- We have been able to start reading in our new Science textbooks! We have read some great information on erosion and weathering, and the pictures in the book are just stunning!

Have a great weekend, and please return the conference forms in the folders Monday! Thank you!Mr. Morawitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09886393209054351508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3024161000157354195.post-6858339492372477252016-10-13T17:27:00.003-07:002016-10-13T17:27:32.669-07:00October 14, 2016 Weekly UpdateHi everyone, and I hope this week has been a good one!

I first want to say "Thank You" to those who were able to attend our "Brown Bag" event Friday morning! It really helped the kids show off their finished personal narratives in style! We appreciate you taking the time out of your day to share this first annual event!

We were also treated to a healthy snack and lesson on advertising from the Columbia Public Schools Nutrition Department! The kids really liked the sunflower "peanut" butter and crackers!

Besides our recent classroom events, we have been busy as usual this past week! Here is a brief summary of events:

Writing- The kids are feeling quite accomplished, as we have published our first writing piece of the year! They worked hard editing, revising, and putting the finishing touches on their personal narratives. I am happy to see that students added details, dialogue, theme. They also read over their work, figured out which text needs to be added or removed, and organized their work into paragraphs that follow a logical narrative sequence.

Math- This week, we began looking at 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication! We are starting off by looking at the relationship between our basic facts and larger multiplication problems. We ended the week working on estimating and breaking apart numbers.
Reading- We have been reviewing how to make inferences, predictions, and using context clues! We took a practice test on Friday, and we discussed the answers in small groups. On Monday, we will take a reading assessment over inferencing to show off how much we have learned about these skills!

Science- We have been talking about erosion and weathering. On Thursday, we went outside to observe the practices being used on our school property to prevent erosion. We have also watched an educational video that detailed different types of erosion!

I think that's about it for this week. I will post some pictures from Mr. Morawitzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09886393209054351508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3024161000157354195.post-69770845389685663872016-10-06T17:56:00.000-07:002016-10-06T17:56:19.481-07:00Oct. 7, 2016 Morawitz Family UpdateHello all!

It has been yet another busy week of learning in room 218!

Check below for some of the highlieghts!

Writing- We have been working on revising and editing our personal narrative drafts. Next week, we will be publishing our final copies, and we are excited to share our hard work during our "Brown Bag" breakfast event on Friday!

Science- We have begun exploring our unit on Earth Systems. The first part of this unit focuses on erosion. We have taken a walk outside and seen erosion/erosion prevention on our school grounds, and we have watched a cool Bill Nye video that explains the different ways in which erosion occurs.

Math- We finished up Topic 3. Topic 5 is our next unit, and this unit takes multiplication to 2 digit multiplied by 1 digit numbers!

Reading- Last week, we came to the exciting conclusion of Zach's Lie! Next week, we will be starting a new chapter book! In Daily 5, we are focusing on inferencing/prediction and fluency and accuracy!

Well, I thinik that's about it for now. Be sure to look in the Friday folder for the Brown Bag invitation, and we will see you on Friday!
